TP-Link 16 Port Gigabit Ethernet Network Switch, Desktop/ Wall-Mount, Fanless, Sturdy Metal w/ Shielded Ports, Traffic Optimization, Unmanaged (TL-SG116)

I purchased this 16-port unmanaged switch to replace an assortment of smaller switches I was using in my home office. The price seemed reasonable for a brand-name 16 port 1GB switch. When it arrived, I connected all of my office devices to it with CAT6 cable and took it for a spin. All I can say is "wow." This switch is a great example of plug-and-play. I powered it on, connected my ISP cable into port one and then plugged in all of the cables from my desktop computers, printers, scanner and notebook computer, plus the home wireless router. Everything worked flawlessly. I used the browser on my desktop to run a download/upload speed test and the switch was definitely delivering the 1GB advertised throughput. The switch has to be plugged into a power outlet but there is no fan inside. I have not noticed it heating up at all and I appreciate the absence of yet another fan whirring faintly in the background. The unit is a little over 11 inches wide, so before you order one, make sure you have enough space for it in your workplace. It can also be mounted on the wall. As a final test, I plugged enough equipment into the switch to use up 15 of the 16 ports. I wanted to see if there would be any traffic collision issues. Success. Performance didn't appear to be degraded on any of the devices connected to it. I am more than pleased with this purchase. My home office network runs much faster than it did with my older switches. The large number of ports on this new switch allowed me to reduce some of the cable clutter around my workspace. The quality of the metal case is excellent. It's a good day when you can purchase a network computing device that comes out of the box, plugs in and just plain works. I highly recommend this product if you're running out of ports on a 4 or 8-port switch. If you are standing up a wired home network for the first time, spend a few extra dollars for this switch if you have four or five devices to connect. That will leave a lot of unused ports on your switch but you won't have to worry about buying another switch if you expand your network in the future.

I love this switch. I already have another TP-Link 8 port 1Gbit switch that I have 6 of 8 ports in use at the moment. And just like that switch, this 2.5Gbit 5-port switch by TP-Link is another winner in my book. It just feels like it's a quality build, it runs cool thanks to the materials used on the casing, and believe me, it's getting constant traffic through it. It handles PC2 (my server PC) streaming several cameras... well, I won't go through my whole PC/IoT/streaming devices/PC's/Phones that I have. The real thing for this review that matters is that this thing is built well, runs cool, feels sturdy, works like a charm and I would use this or one with more ports, again, when the time comes that I need more 2.5Gbit switches. But I don't have enough devices to benefit from any more of them at the moment. TP-Link makes excellent home/consumer grade networking devices in my experience.

It is so amazing having a gig switch and easy to install

To try to stay brief, I had 500/500 fiber to ONT->Firewalla RouterFirewalla had ethernet lines to my WiFi AP, my network printer and my Monitor that was a ethernet hub for 2 computers.Firewalla router is a great device but it sent me multiple notification every day that port speeds dropped or increased multiple times a day as devices went to sleep and woke up.So my initial motivation to buy this switch was to make those notifications stop. That has now occurred by putting this TP-Link 8 port after the Firewalla, with just a single 2.5GB line from Firewalla to the switch. But my speeds throughout my network have increased ~600Mbps up/down, including with my wifi. My Firewalla previously had 1 outgoing 2.5GB port and two 1GB ports in use... I can only think by it only having to manage data from 1 outgoing port it can be quicker than managing 3 outgoing ports (?).I had seen reviews the box gets hot. After several hours of mine being setup (with 4 of 8 ports in use ~500-600Mbps) it's not even warm. So far, I'm happy with the result.
