Q: When the arm and lamp are at 180 degrees, the lamp part slips and ends up vertical.. Is there any way to tighten the ball and socket part? Thanks!

I have also had this problem for a LONG time! I had tried earlier to tighten the screws next to the ball with no effect. Thanks so much to reviewer Cincybob, who wrote that you just need to take a mini file and rough up the exposed part of the ball while rotating it all the way around (to access as much of the ball as possible), without taking anything apart. I wasn't sure if a "mini file" meant an ordinary nail file or something else, but I just tried this using the rough side of an ordinary nail file, and it WORKED! The lamp head still dips down a tiny bit, but is held up close to horizontal now—enough to be OK. Man, I wish I had read about this solution several years ago!

Q: Can you use the light independent of magnifier?

Not sure what your question means. Only time the lens comes into play is when you look through it. Light functions separately from the lens and is essentially a desk lamp that you can change the position by using the articulated arms. Using the lens merely means you are looking through it into the center of the light being emitted. While there is a cover for the lens, it doesn't seem to affect the light in any way. Light is much more intense than the florescent one I used before and a "cleaner" white as well. Magnification is about the same.

I've had the product for about two and a half weeks and it's mounted on a bartop in my basement. Lens is glass, housing and movable arm are metal, yet the head and arm are both light and well supported with a tensioning bolts and swivel mount system, so the head never feels like it's going to fall. Instead, everything feels easy and light with no instability, as long as the surface it's mounted to is somewhat sturdy. A cheap folding card table won't be a good place for any safe use, while a desk, kitchen table, or heavy shelving unit would be suitable for mounting pictured on product page.

Q: What are the dimensions of the clamp? I want to secure it to a table with a 2 inch lip.

My bench is 2 and 3/4" inches thick and it fits snug, so 2 inches will be ok.
